My brothers do love me :)


This year was my last year competing in the schools athletic west Leinster Track and Field competition :( It was sad to say the least, I have competed for my school for the last six years, every year taking part in both shot putt and discus other than first year where I only competed in shot putt. Each year I worked hard training after school every Tuesday and Thursday from the end of March or the beginning of April and often my training included me training on my own or coaching other students. I won a medal every year and to be honest I felt I worked hard to get them and I am proud of my achievements.

The last six years competing for my school have been amazing, I have made new friends, improved on my talents and most of all I have had fun. i am going to miss going to Santry every year now that I am nearing my time in St.Wolstan's but I have every intention in supporting my school at this event in years to come. 

Being the last year for many sixth year students we ensured that we went out with a bang. With the help of some of the fifth year students who were in the senior category also, we brought home the trophy for the best senior girls school. It is an amazing feeling knowing that your last year competing for your school was a success, not only did I win tow medals in the discus and the shot putt but I also helped to ensure our school brought home the trophy for the best senior girls school. 

I am proud to say that i have competed for St. Wolstan's and although I am leaving in less than a months time I am glad to say I played a part in the reputation St. Wolstan's has built up of the years for our track and field success. not only that but I am sure that there will be plenty more trophies and medals making its way to St. Wolstan's in the coming years.

Catch up!!

For the past number of weeks there has been a lack of new posts on my blog, and well I guess I am back. For the past while I have been busy with my orals and preparing for the leaving cert!! I am delighted to say that my orals are over :) Irish went well but Spanish went not so well but at least it is all done now! I have one more exam next week-L.C.V.P and then I have a bit of a break before the rest of the leaving cert.

As I have to catch up on some work and I am competing in Santry this week I will not have any new posts until this weekend. So for now I will leave you with this, and I promise some new posts over the weekend :)

Stories of hope

Do you have a story you can share to provide hope for those suffering from depression? Well if you do I have the perfect way for you to share that story.

Stories of hope is a group of people who are trying to achieve an ebook with a difference. They are asking people to share their stories of their experiences with depression and how they got through it. The aim of this is to show others that it is possible to get through depression. Just because its an illness it doesn't mean that it has to be an illness for life.

When I asked what a member of the group behind stories of hope what it was all about this is what was said.

"What we are trying to achieve is a ebook with a difference, instead of concentrating on the negative side of depression we want people to see that it is possible to overcome depression.
The book is aimed at people currently suffering from depression to prove to them that there is a way out!"

Being someone who has suffered from depression I too can say that there is a way out and things do get better. I am not going to lie, I still have my bad days but I know that I will get through them because of the support I have around me. It does get better it really does, after all there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel but it is there. i have battled depression for at least three years now and in the beginning I though I would never be happy again, but I was wrong. With a bit of work and some support it becomes easier and you begin to see that there is hope. As I said, you will have your bad days but you begin to learn that a bad day is not the end of the world and things do get better.

Ok so here it goes, Siobhán asked me ages ago to write a post for the blog, and I guess I have been kind of busy so I have not got around to it.
So I guess that my experience of mental health is complete different from that of Siobhan’s, even though it came from the exacts same place, or more events! I wasn’t the person who had the mental health problems, but rather someone who saw them. Before Siobhán had all of these problems I will be complete honest I was one of those people who just surged mental health off, I didn’t see the importance of it at all! I just thought it was another thing we just heard abbot, but god was I wrong. Mental health is probably the most important thing for us as people to take care of it, without good mental health we would not be able to lead “normal” life’s (now what is normal is a question in itself), but without a good and strong mental health we lose our self’s, and our place within society and it isolates us. Why, well because unlike a physical illness it is not understood and accepted so we make it a taboo, and choose to ignore the problem, because let’s face it that is what this society is great at doing.
I know that was my attitude towards the issue for so long, well if I had even formed a full attitude that would have been it. Now though things are different, I have lived through depression, I have seen what it can do to people, how it can destroy a person, but also how it can bring a whole family together. The one thing that I will always say is true about the struggles Siobhán went through is that it brought our family together and actually made us a family! Just as I said to Siobhán once “I will be honest there are nights that I don’t sleep because I miss you, and because I don’t know what’s going to happen, there are days I worry that you future could be confined to this what it is now, and there are days I worry that I’m going to lose you”, that is how I felt so often through everything, but then I saw the strength and courage that she displayed to overcome the illness and I knew that I would have her for years more, and that she was going to go on and become an inspiration for so many, because she is so strong, and so kind hearted and one of those rare people who can actually make a difference in this world!

The battle Siobhán went through reminds me of a quote I once saw “To get up when you are down, to fight more intensely when you are struggling, to put in the extra effort when you are in such pain, to comeback when nobody expects you to, and to stand tall when everybody is pulling you down, is what makes you a champion”. A champion, a funny word that, I instantly think of Katie Taylor, Derval O’Rourke, Jessica Ennis, people who inspire me, but the one true champion that I know, and that inspires me to live my life to the full, and to fight and make a difference in this world is Siobhán Brady!
I wanted to have structure on this post, but somehow I find myself just writing and not planning, so I hope that it makes sense.
This blog is so important and I respect all of the work that has gone into it, for a person to be so open and so honest about such a hard time, about a time that was so difficult and a time that felt as if there would be no tomorrow is amazing. Most people want to forget those times and leave them behind, that is not happening here, Siobhán is sharing those times in the hope that she can help other people and in the hope that people can and will talk about mental health, so that maybe it will be less of a taboo, and people will understand it more, and ultimately peoples life’s will be saved!
I think that sharing her story is brilliant, and that it is a true show of resilience because, Resiliency is the ability to not only overcome challenge and crisis, trauma and tragedy, but also to bounce back stronger, wiser and more impactful than ever. And that is what Siobhán has done, she has shown that she is a truly resilient champion, because she has not let one thing define her, she has stood above it all and grown from her experiences and is truly an inspiration to all.

World Autism awareness day

"Autism spectrum disorder and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviours."
I dont know much about Autism to be honest but one thing I do know about is the importance of raising awareness. So I have done a bit of research to learn more about Autism myself but also to try and help educate others on Autism. I have not had much interaction with people who have Autism, I have one friend with Autism but due to living far away from each other I do not have much interaction with him at all. Many of us would not know how to act around a person with Autism if we were put in a situation of just you and a person experience Autism and thats ok and that is why we have Autism awareness day- to educate people and prepare them for situations like that.

What causes Autism?

When it comes to Autism each person is very different as we generally are as people we are all different. One treatment may not work for all people with Autism but it may work for one or for five it all depends on the person. To be honest i think that is all the information I can give regarding Autism, I do hope that I have given people the resources need to learn more about autism and I hope I have raised some awareness.
