The Paralympic Games are a major international multi-sport event where athletes with a physical disability can compete. This is very much the same as the Olympics but people with physical disabilities can compete only. This year seen the very first double amputee Oscar Pistorius compete in the Olympics, making history and he will now go on and compete again in the Paralympics. This was a huge stepping stone for sport around the world. I see no problem with people with physical disabilities competing against able bodied people as long as they want to. I have to say that I feel Oscar Pistorius is an inspiration to everybody around the world your and old.

The Paralympics have grown from a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948 to become one of the largest international sport events by the early 21st century. Paralympians strive for equal treatment with non-disabled Olympic athletes, but there is a large funding gap between Olympic and Paralympic athletes. There is a wide variety of disabilities that Paralympic athletes have, there are several categories in which the athletes compete. The disabilities are broken down into six broad categories. The categories are amputee, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, wheelchair, visually impaired, and ”The Others", which are athletes with disabilities that do not fall into the other five categories.

I look to the people that compete in the Paralympics as inspirations. They do not let their disability get in their way. The can do everything that others can do they just have to find other ways of doing it. I am dedicating this blog post to the amazing people in the world that don’t let anything stop them. You guys are true inspirations and I look up to you all. You are more than athletes; you are role models, inspirations and most of all people who understand the true meaning of living life to the full. Usually people say that the sky is the limit but for you guys I believe that you have going about the limit of the sky in what you have achieved in life.

Good luck to all of the Athletes competing this year.

Little things.... :)

The top five must see funny clips from Ellen.

Sometimes you just need a laugh.... and who better than to give you that laugh than Ellen. She is my idol and I would do anything to get to meet her. But hey we all have dreams and I guess that is going to stay as a dream for me. But when Monday comes along and your suffering from the Monday Morning blues watch theses videos if you need some cheering up :)

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

The 25th of August saw the passing of the first man to ever walk on the moon. He passed away aftercomplications from cardiovascular producer he had on the 7th of August.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969.In those first few moments when he was on the moon, during the climax of heated space race with the then-Soviet Union, Armstrong stopped in what he called "a tender moment" and left a patch commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action. The moonwalk marked America's victory in the Cold War space race that began Oct. 4, 1957, with the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik satellite that sent shock waves around the world.

He has achieved so much in his long life and he is going to be missed all around the world. My thoughts are with his family and friends but one thing is for sure He will never be forgotten.

R.I.P Neil Armstrong.

The final Lap!

The time has come; I am in my last year of school. I am preparing to do my leaving cert. But most of all I am preparing to leave school and more onto college. It’s scary I have to say. School has been my safety net for the past 14 years. I will be off to college in a year. But I guess it’s just another step I have to take on the journey that is life.

I want to make this last year of school the best. I want to have fun I want to do well and I want to learn new things. There’s no point just worrying about all the homework and study that needs to be done. I’m going to have fun as well and I am going to make sure I have fun; I mean school isn’t all that bad in the end.

I am looking forward to moving on from school. I’m looking forward to learning new things, doing new things and experiencing new things. I am looking forward to beginning my career as a paramedic. It will be an adventure, I will beginning the rest of my life. I will take all the things I have learned in school with me. Teachers have spent the last 14 years preparing me for this and although it is a school year away I am thinking about leaving school. I remember my first day of primary school as well.

I don’t feel ready to leave school today and I’m not sure I will be ready when I finish school but the thing is I have no choice. I have to finish and i have to move on with my life. I’m not ready and im not sure if I will be ready but all I know is I want to move ion regardless of whether or not I am ready. I will have to take my steps to the rest of my life at some stage. I am glad that I have had all the support from my teachers to get me to 6th year. There were times I thought that I could never get through each day but because of the amazing support I had and the people around me they got me through it. But most of all they have prepared me for life.

So in the words of Dr Seuss

“You have brains in your head,
Feet in your shoes,
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose,
You’re on your own,
And you know what you know.
You’re the guy that will decide where you will go.”

Youth Panel.

I have just sent in my application to See Change to be on a youth panel. This panel is all about promoting positive mental health and helping See Change to make a difference.

Here is some information about the Youth Panel:

“Thank you for your interest in getting involved with See Change. Our youth panel will be a valuable part of our campaign, whether you’re on Facebook and Twitter or raising awareness in communities.

The Youth Panel (YP) is a group of 10-15 young people aged between 18 and 25 who will advise and guide See Change in all areas of our work, get Ireland talking about mental health, reshaping people’s attitudes and creating new fun ways of reducing the stigma attached to mental health problems.

See Change is a social movement that is changing how Ireland thinks about mental health. We want to create a conversation within the community about people’s attitudes and behaviour towards mental health. Mental health is part and parcel of being human but society needs to recognise that everyone can recover from it. The aim of the youth panel is to first create a grassroot network among young people to help us spread this message and aid us in creating this shift with wider sphere of society.

Our key aims in See Change are to:

  1. Create an environment where people can be more open and positive in their attitudes and behaviour towards mental health;
  2. Create greater understanding and acceptance of people with mental health problems;
  3. Create greater understanding and knowledge of mental health problems and of health services that provide support for mental health problems; and
  4. To reduce stigma associated with mental health problems and challenge discrimination.”

Think Big :)

Late last week I received an email from Think Big Ireland. The email stated that my application for my project t Label Jars not people had been accepted. I was over the moon. I began this project on a spur of the moment to be honest. I had thought about it a lot but I didn’t plan anything I just decided to do it. I applied for think Big in the hopes that I would get accepted but after not hearing from them for a while I decided to go ahead and start my project.

What started off as my project has now become a group project. From the very beginning I have a huge amount of support of my friends and I now have formed a team with Emer, Ashling, Kellie and Louise. We all represent the Labels are for Jars not People.

Our project is all about promoting positive mental health and reducing the stigma associated with mental health and illness. We are producing a range of T-shirts with different sayings on the such as “Be kind to your mind” The t-shirts cost ten euro and all the profits that are made are being given to charities that are associated with mental health.

My team and I will be attending a training day this coming Friday in the 02 offices with Think Big. We have been doing a lot of working and our hoping that Thing Big will help us start our project again in Theory to ensure we have done everything correctly and hopefully they will be able o help us with promotion and make a difference.

Promoting positive metal health and reducing stigma means a lot to me since I have become ill. Before I became ill I knew nothing about mental health which made everything scarier for me. it made things harder to cope in the beginning until I began to learn more about what was going on and what I was experiencing. I don’t want this to happen to other your people. I want people to know about mental health and talk about issues associated with mental health regardless weather they know someone who is suffering or if they are suffering. People need to know about this because without our mental health what do we have?

The more people talk about mental health the less of a taboo subject it will become and more people will seek help when they need it.  We need to get talking and I want to be able to help make a difference and get people talking. I talk about mental health to try and help people do you?

Visit the Think Big website here to learn more about what they do.

Visit labels are for Jars blog here to learn what we are all about.

You can do more than you think.

Oh the places you will go!

When I was in hospital I had weekly sessions with the O.T to help me to find new ways of coping and when I can do when I want to self-harm and how I can prevent myself from harming. Thees sessions were what I benefited most from during my time in hospital. If it wasn't for them I would still be self-harming. The day before I was getting discharged I had my last session and Isobel the O.T gave me a book call " Oh the places you will go" its a child's book but i have to say that since i have been out of hospital it has got me through some of the hard times that I have had.

It's a Dr Seuss book so it is really good. Here are some of my favorite parts of the book that help me the most when I am struggling and they mean a lot to me. You never know they might provide you with a bit of support too.

" You wont lag behind because you'll have the speed
you'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead
Wherever you fly you'll be the best of the best
Wherever you go you will top all the rest."

"Expect when you don't
because sometimes you wont."

" you can get so confused
that you'll start in a race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space
headed I fear toward a most unpleasant place.
 The Waiting Place."

"Somehow you'll escape
all the waiting and staying
you'll find the bright places
where boom bangs are playing"

"You'll get all mixed up, of course
as you already know
you'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go
so be sure when you step
step with care and great tact
and remember that life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left."

   "And will you succeed?
Yes! you will indeed!
(98 and 3/4 per cent guaranteed.)
Kid you'll move mountains!"

be your name Buxbaum or Bixy or Bray
or Mordecali Ali Van O'Shea,
your off to great places!
Today is your day!
your mountain is waiting.
So... get on your way!"

Be Happy.

The circle of life.

Olympic inspirations!!

During the past week or so I have been very much tuned into the Olympics. I must say that there has been two athletes that have amazed me. These two men  are true inspirations.

Kieran Behan.

After being told that he would never walk again he proved medical professions wrong by making it to the Olympics as an amazing Gymnast. The courage and strength he has shown in his life is more than many of us will ever show, more than any of us will ever imagine possible.

Since the age of ten he has been plagued by injuries as he describes them as "a bad run", but in reality were a series of incidents which make the fact that he is even walking today seem miraculous. An operation to remove a benign tumor in his  thigh left him wheelchair-bound as a child after complications  during the procedure.

Despite recovering enough to return to the sport he loves, he then suffered brain damage just two years later from a freak accident on the high bar.He then spent  almost three years attempting to regain the quality of life he had known Many of us would have given up but die to the sheer determination he has he kept going until he supervised all doctors and specialists by becoming a world series floor champion.

He is a true inspiration, after being told he may never walk again he went to the Olympics and did Ireland proud. It just goes to show what hard work will do for you and that it is important never to give up on something that you love. Do as Kieran did and follow your dreams. You are a true inspiration and you have done Ireland proud.

Oscar Pistorius.

Being the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics he has made history. He has inspired people all around the world. Letting us now that disabilities do not mean we can’t do things we just have to find different ways to do the things we want to do. He fought to get into the Olympics and ran an amazing race to get into the semi-finals. Although he did not get into the final he is being declared a winner at the Olympics.
Pistorius was born without fibulas and had his legs amputated below the knee before he was a year old. In the meantime the competition isn't over for Oscar Pistorius - he'll run in the 4 by 400 relays on Thursday before defending his 100, 200, and 400 titles at the Paralympics.
After reading his story I have been inspired. He has not let his disability stop him. He has embraced it and has achieved things that many of us don’t.  He didn’t accept the limits of his disabilities, he found a way to overcome the barriers that stood in front of him.

These two men have do amazing things that many of us will never achieve. I have no doubt that there are many more people out there like these two amazing men who feel that they cant achieve their dreams. After this years Olympics that may all change. This will show them that anything is Possible. Nothing is impossible.... even the word itself says Im Possible. Not only are these people inspirations to those facing the same difficulties but they are inspirations to everybody around the world. This goes to show that there is always hope.

Annoying little things.

Keep calm Ireland Katie’s got this.

Today Katie Taylor made Irish history being the first ever female boxer to ox in the Olympics. Not only has she made history but she has also secured Ireland a second Olympic medal in London 2012.  John Jo Nevin was the first Irish Olympian to secure a medal in this year’s Olympics and Now Katie Taylor has done the same.

She began boxing at the young age of 12 and has been coached by her father since then. It was in 2005 when she first gained glory when she competed in the armature European championships. Since then she has excelled becoming the undefeated champion. She is by far an unstoppable athlete in the prime of her boxing years. She is an amazing young athlete with many more years of brilliant boxing ahead of her. She is an inspiration to women in Ireland and all around the world showing us that hard work, dedication and never giving up really does pay off.

Katie after winning Boxer of the year.

Well done Katie you have made your country proud and showed us what hard work can do.You will inspire many young people around the world now and for generations to come.
